Elizabeth Lambert Spearheads UNM Charity Event + News

Hi folks, an update at last.

Elizabeth Lambert has recently spearheaded a charity event at the University of New Mexico for Locks of Love, a charity that creates custom hair pieces for needy children who have lost their own hair due to illness.  The University of New Mexico briefly mentioned Elizabeth in their press release about the event, and unfortunately that has led to more spite and ridicule being directed at her.

Grow up, h#ters, you're pathetic.

Here is the press release:

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team is partnering with the UNM Women's Resource Center to assist with awareness for Locks of Love.

Thursday, April 22, the Lobos will collect hair donations outside UNM's Student Union Building for children suffering from long term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity to help children in need," said Lobo head coach Kit Vela. "It's a great opportunity for our girls to reach out and give back, literally from themselves to others. We want to get the Lobo community together and get as much hair as we possibly can and send it to Locks of Love."

Senior-to-be Elizabeth Lambert spearheaded the event and is no stranger to the Locks of Love charity.
"This is a great cause and it's something that me and my whole family have taken part in before," said Lambert. "I have hair that will grow back, so why not donate it to kids who don't have any. I did it when I was a junior in high school and I have no problem helping out again. A custom-made hairpiece will help boost the self-esteem level of a child in need."

Locks of Love sounds like a great organization, and our message to Elizabeth for her charity work is:  Rock On!

Another interesting mention of Elizabeth occurred recently in an article on the Psychology Today website.  Brian Tompkins, the head coach of Men's Soccer at Yale University, wrote about double standards and sexism in the media's attitude towards women's athletics, and used Elizabeth as an example, pointing out that her famously "outrageous" behavior against BYU would not have been considered noteworthy by the media if she were a male athlete:

"Elizabeth Lambert, a University of New Mexico soccer player became something close to a national pariah last year when she struck and pulled the hair of an opponent in a conference playoff game. While her poor judgement and lack of self-discipline were evident for all to see, was it the "girls should play nice" bias that resulted in her actions being relentlessly broadcast from coast to coast? It is hard to imagine that a similarly imprudent or violent situation in a men's game ( and they happen frequently) would raise an eyebrow in the media and would almost certainly not end up as fodder for the hysterical disdain of television presenters on mainstream programs like the Today Show or The View."  [ click here to go to the full article ]

That's all the updates I have for you right now.  I'll post more in the future if I come across anything that is pertinent, but for the most part it seems like Elizabeth has not been anxious to seek publicity or media attention, so we won't be trying to stir that up here!  Hopefully the media firestorm of h#te that was directed at her has passed now, and she has been able to return to her regular life as a college student and Division 1 soccer player in peace.

Catch you on the flip side.
